Siberian Cat History and Registry
The Siberian cat is an ancient breed thought to be the ancestor of all present day long coat cats. Siberian cats are the result of 1000 years of natural selection in Siberia, Russia. Best known as the Siberian Forest Cat, the national cat of Russia. It is believed that native felines were bred by wild forest cats resulting in a unique and adaptable breed of cat now know as the Siberian Forest Cat and has thrived in the harsh environment of Siberia for hundreds of generations. Recently (1980s) people imported Siamese cats near St Petersburg, Russia, along the river, Neva. The offspring of the crossbreeding the Siamese and the natural Siberian cats yielded a new color pattern not previously seen in the natural Siberian cats. These cats are referred to as "colorpoints" or "Neva Masquerades" and not a result of 1000 years of natural selection. Thus, the "Traditional Siberian Cat" is recognized as the Pure Siberian Cat, since it is the result of nature and not man. Most domestic breeds of cats are the result of mans selection, the Traditional Siberian Cat is a pure and perfect gift of Mother Nature. The colorpoint version is classified as a sub-species of the Siberian by the most prestigious European Cat Registry FiFe and is referred to as a Neva Masquerade. The American registry TICA does not distinguish the Traditional Siberian Cats from the Neva Masquerades, but for those of you wanting to become informed and responsible pet owners should know this difference, especially in homes with allergy sensitive members. Both the Traditional Siberian Cat and the Neva Masquerade were introduced to the USA in the early 1990's. Siberians are considered one of the two largest domestic felines because of it's large muscles and dense bone structure. Its coat is semi-long haired, three layered, and comes in many colors and forest color patterns. We breed only Traditional Siberian cats and do not breed color-points or any Siberian cats with colorpoints or Neva Masquerades in their pedigree. Traditional Siberian kittens have blue eyes at birth but within weeks their eye color changes to golden green. Neva Masqaurade's eyes remains blue like the Siamese cat and is a definite indication of cross breeding. The dander secreted by Traditional Siberian cat's is at much lower concentrations of (FEL D1, the primary human allergen) than that produced and secreted by most other domestic cats. For this reason the Traditional Siberian Cat is considered to be the most hypoallergenic cat breed in existence today. Svetdanhaus Cattery is committed to breeding the very best characteristics of the Traditional Siberian Cats to produce the most hardy hypoallergenic cats and hypoallergenic kittens possible. People with cat allergies can tolerate the Traditional Siberian cat quite well as proven through hundreds of testimonials by very happy families. Siberians are also known to be dog-like. They are more dependent on human interaction and tend to bond closer than other feline breeds. This also creates a situation that provides for easier training. They are not independent cats like most other domestic breeds and crave the company of other living things. Siberians are powerful cats, but rarely injure their human friends, even in play. They purr very loudly and love to head-butt their favorite humans. They are not very vocal but quickly establish communications through chirps and body language. They move into our homes with ease and rapidly win over our hearts. Because of the obvious reasons above and many amazing others, the Siberian cat is rapidly becoming the pet of choice for many families. Those of us at Svetdanhaus Cattery, enjoy the time we spend with these cats. We have developed tremendous bonds with our feline family.
